OTTAWA – Peter Goldring, Member of Parliament for Edmonton East, will be a member of the Canadian Delegation to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Parliamentary Assembly’s Election Observation Mission in Ukraine Sept. 27 to Oct. 2

Mr. Goldring is one of five Canadian parliamentarians chosen by OSCE to monitor the Ukrainian Parliamentary election being held September 30. This is his fourth trip to Ukraine as an election observer, having previously taken part in two presidential elections in 2004 and the 2006 parliamentary election.

Mr. Goldring says he is pleased to be able to continue to serve East European democracy. “The Government of Canada is committed to democratic values all over the world and has a special relationship with Ukraine. The Ukrainian-Canadian population, more than 1.1 million immigrants and descendents of immigrants, has watched Ukraine emerge from totalitarian rule to become a thriving democracy. This election is another sign of the great strides Ukraine has taken since achieving independence 16 years ago”

This pre-term election of the 450 members of the Ukrainian parliament is due to a political crisis this past spring between the president and the ruling coalition. It also followed a series of conflicts between the President and the Prime Minister, due in part to an unclear distribution of competencies in the Constitution, after amendments adopted in 2004, which came into force in 2006. The political crisis ended when the President, the Prime Minister and the Speaker of Parliament agreed to hold parliamentary elections on September 30.

In addition to actually visiting polling stations on election day, OSCE delegates will be meeting with key Ukrainian leaders as they receive full in-depth briefings on Ukrainian issues from local experts.

“It will be an honour to accompany my colleagues from Canada and around the world to Ukraine. Canada has a deep and abiding interest in Ukraine – in remembering its past and helping to develop its future. In order to do both, we must continue to be a source of friendship and support in the present,” says Goldring.
