ECONOMIC ACTION PLAN CONTINUES TO CREATE JOBS, ECONOMIC GROWTH AND AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR CANADIANS

February 24, 2011

Edmonton – Jobs and economic growth continue to be created by Canada’s Economic Action Plan announced Peter Goldring, Member of Parliament for Edmonton East.  Peter Goldring was in Edmonton today to tour the construction site and celebrate the significant progress made on the Mayfair Village project, a breakthrough affordable housing project that he has been lobbying for for many years.

“Our government’s top priority is the economy, which is why we are continuing to implement Canada’s Economic Action Plan,” said Peter Goldring. “The developing Mayfair Village Project has created local jobs and economic growth, and will improve the lives of residents in the area so that Canadian families continue to prosper for years to come.”

The Harper Government is demonstrating the job creation and benefits of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. Peter Goldring’s visit to the Mayfair Village site is just one of over 80 events happening across the country today.

Mayfair Village is the creative realization of a model to provide much needed, affordable rental housing to the Edmonton marketplace and exemplifies the template of cooperation between private industry and federal, provincial and municipal levels of government.  Mayfair Village South will be a 15-storey concrete hi-rise building consisting of 237 units of apartment housing and the main floor of Mayfair Village South will incorporate retail shops facing 109th Street that encourage pedestrian traffic and street culture. The apartment housing will rent at a rate of 10% less than market average (as reported from time to time by Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation) for a period of 20 years to as many households as possible whose combined total of annual income falls within the Core Need Income Threshold (CNIT) for the City of Edmonton, and is only one-third of the taxpayer cost of non-profit projects. Mr. Goldring told Randy Ferguson, chief Operating officer of developer ProCura that this 237 unit project means a $40 million saving for taxpayers.

The Harper government is committed to stimulating the economy through the creation of jobs. Canada’s Economic Action Plan continues to create jobs and economic growth with more than 26,000 job-creating projects underway or completed from coast to coast to coast.

The results are clear: Since July 2009 Canada’s economy has created over 460,000 new jobs and the economy has grown for five straight quarters.

“The economic recovery is still fragile,” said Peter Goldring. “That is why we must stay on track and continue to focus on the economy.”

Canada’s Economic Action Plan provides close to $16 billion to modernize a broad range of infrastructure including roads, bridges, public transit, parks and water treatment facilities, and to support home ownership, help stimulate the housing sector and improve housing across Canada.
