PETER GOLDRING ELECTED TO VICE – CHAIR OF SOUTH AMERICAN PARLIIMENTARY GROUPS

December 10, 2010

Ottawa – Peter Goldring, Member of Parliament for Edmonton East, has been elected Vice-Chair of The Canada-Argentina Parliamentary Friendship Group and the Canada-Chile Parliamentary Friendship Group.

“I am very pleased to be able to work with fellow parliamentarians who share my interest and concerns in relation to Canada’s current emphasis on the relationship and opportunities in the Americas,” Mr. Goldring said. “I am honoured that they have selected me to assume a leadership role in these Parliamentary Friendship Groups. These groups are an ideal forum to address the strengthening of Canada’s relationships with two very important South American countries.”

Mr. Goldring, who is a member of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development, has had a strong interest in the Americas and is also a member of the Canada-Haiti, Canada-Mexico and Canada-Caribbean groups. As well as advocating for increased relationships between Canada and the rest of the Americas he has travelled extensively in the Caribbean region.

Parliamentary Friendship Groups play a role in supporting ongoing parliamentary relations with the identified country or in providing an opportunity for parliamentarians interested in a specific international cause to engage with colleagues with a similar interest.
