Peter Goldring elected Vice-Chair of Canada-Ukraine Parliamentary Group

OTTAWA – Edmonton East Member of Parliament Peter Goldring has been elected once again as vice-chair of the Canada-Ukraine Parliamentary Friendship group at that organization’s annual meeting. Members of Parliament and Senators from all parties gathered in Ottawa June 14 to elect a new executive.

“As the largest group of its kind in Parliament with a specific interest in Canada-Ukraine relations and a focus on fostering closer cultural, social and economic ties, we are committed to working in a non-partisan fashion together with representatives of Ukraine in Ottawa.  We also are committed to making a close relationship even more beneficial to all concerned,” said Mr. Goldring.

He is a member of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development, past Chair of the Canada-Ukraine group and was the first Conservative MP to label the Holodomor a genocide when speaking in the House of Commons in 1999. He has travelled to Ukraine as an election monitor for all presidential and parliamentary elections since November 2004and championed a Ukrainian resolution on the Holodomor at the 2008 OSCE Parliamentary Assembly is Astana, Kazakhstan.

With more than 1,100,000 Canadians of Ukrainian descent, Canada has a longstanding and special relationship with Ukraine, which is enhanced through Parliamentary Friendship Group activities.
